Government borrowing plan outlines Rs6.86 trillion in new debt

According to Dawn, Pakistan's Ministry of Finance reported that total public debt has risen to Rs86.7 trillion as of June 2026, a 76% increase from the Rs49.3 trillion recorded in June 2022.

The ministry's Annual Borrowing Plan for 2027 states that gross financing needs for the current fiscal year are projected at Rs28.65 trillion. To finance the budget deficit, the government plans to borrow an additional Rs6.86 trillion, comprising Rs6.046 trillion domestically and Rs813 billion externally.

The ministry said it aims to reduce reliance on short-term treasury bills, shifting instead to more medium- and long-term instruments like Pakistan Investment Bonds.
