OpenAI cancels release of Astra 6.1 AI model over safety standards

OpenAI has cancelled the release of its newest AI model, Astra 6.1, after internal testing found it did not meet the company's safety standards, Dawn reported. The company confirmed the decision on Monday.

In a statement, OpenAI's head of safety systems, Saachi Jain, said the model did not meet the bar in terms of staying within its scope and how it communicates its work to a user. Jain stated the company maintains an extremely high safety standard for models it releases.

The announcement comes one day before OpenAI's annual developer conference. It follows recent months where safety concerns have escalated after models from OpenAI and a rival lab were involved in security incidents during testing.
