According to Dawn, Pakistan's total public debt stood at Rs86.7 trillion by the end of June 2026, a 76 percent increase from Rs49.3 trillion in June 2022. The Ministry of Finance provided these figures in its Annual Borrowing Plan 2027.

The ministry stated that domestic debt comprises Rs59.4 trillion of the total, with external debt amounting to Rs27.3 trillion. For the current fiscal year, the government plans to borrow an additional Rs6.86 trillion to finance the budget deficit.

The government's gross financing needs for the year are projected at Rs28.647 trillion, which is approximately 20 percent of the GDP for FY27. The ministry said it intends to reduce reliance on short-term treasury bills and increase issuances of longer-term Pakistan Investment Bonds.
