Shark stranded in Busan canal draws crowds as rescue operation fails

According to Dawn, a shark stranded in a canal in the South Korean port city of Busan has become a wildlife attraction, with the city reporting around 600,000 visitors over two weeks. The 3.5-metre shark, believed to be a bronze whaler, was first seen in the North Port waterway on September 18.

Authorities attempted a rescue on September 29, using vessels to spray jets of water behind the shark to guide it towards the open sea. Videos published by Yonhap News Television showed the shark swimming away from the water streams, causing the operation to fail.

As reported by the Chosun Daily, officials now plan to use a net in a fresh attempt to guide the shark out of the canal. The animal has been nicknamed 'Bukangi' by locals, after the port area where it is trapped.
