Tarar warns India's IWT move sets dangerous global precedent

Information Minister Atahullah Tarar has warned that India's decision to hold the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance could set a wider precedent affecting global transboundary water governance, according to a report by Dawn. He urged the international community to take note.

Tarar made the remarks while addressing an event in Islamabad on Wednesday. The treaty has been a contentious issue since India unilaterally suspended it in April last year, an action followed by a brief military conflict between the two neighbours in May 2025.

Pakistan has previously stated that any attempt to suspend its water share is an "act of war", arguing the treaty has no provision for unilateral suspension and that India's move violates the 1969 Vienna Convention. Tarar said Pakistan is a peaceful nation but cannot allow India to weaponise water, which is a basic right for 240 million Pakistanis.
