Nepra to review industrial tariff as consumers face Rs25bn fuel cost

Consumers will see an additional fuel cost of Rs25 billion on their October electricity bills, reported Dawn. The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has decided to review an incremental industrial tariff package introduced last December.

At a public hearing, the Central Power Purchasing Agency's CEO stated that an extra cost of Rs1.73 per unit in August was due to expensive imports of RLNG and coal, coupled with lower-than-expected generation from hydropower and nuclear plants.

Hydropower's share was 38%, below the 41% target, while nuclear power fell to 10% from an estimated 16.4% due to an outage at the Karachi plant. This shortfall increased imported coal-based generation to 15.6%, far above the planned 7.4%.
