US-led coalition formally ends combat mission in Iraq

According to Dawn, a US-led coalition deployed in 2014 to fight the Islamic State group has formally concluded its combat mission in Iraq. The Pentagon announced the end of Operation Inherent Resolve on Wednesday, following a gradual withdrawal of troops from bases across the country.

The coalition was formed to combat IS militants who had seized territory in Iraq and Syria. While the group was declared defeated in Iraq in 2017, coalition forces remained to battle its remnants.

The United States and Iraq agreed in 2024 to wind down the mission. The Pentagon stated that the US will continue to provide targeted training and intelligence support to Iraqi partners.
