US reassures Pakistan its Kashmir stance remains unchanged

Washington has told Pakistan its position on Kashmir remains unchanged and that it continues to regard the region as disputed territory, according to diplomatic sources reported by Dawn.

The clarification followed controversial remarks by US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, who during a visit to Srinagar on August 19 described Jammu and Kashmir as an "important part of India".

Islamabad sought clarification from the US on whether this signalled a policy shift. US officials told their Pakistani counterparts there had been "no change in our position" and that Washington still sees the issue as requiring resolution between Pakistan and India.

The sources also cited former President Trump's past offer to help resolve the Kashmir dispute as evidence that Washington views the issue as unresolved.
